A couple of the episodes were so good in fact – especially one that Spielberg directed, a special one-hour long episode (most were only half an hour) that featured Kevin Costner and Kiefer Sutherland as pilots who face a dire choice, with one young colleague’s life hanging in the balance – that Universal released three-of-them, together, as a theatrical release.
“Amazing Stories : The Complete First Season”
Starring: Kevin Costner, Kiefer Sutherland, Billy Zane, John Lithgow, Christopher Lloyd, Danny De Vito, Harvey Keitel
Before “Nightmares & Dreamscapes”, and long before “The Masters of Horror”, there was “Amazing Stories” – one of the earliest shows (well, let’s not bring “Twilight Zone” into the equation) to offer some of the most diverse and talented filmmakers a chance to show us, well, just how versatile and talented they are by all adding their touch to the one project. Like “Nightmares” and “Masters”, the Steven Spielberg produced (he also directed two episodes) series was an amalgamation of implausible stories (similar to what Bryan Brown’s doing now with “Twisted Tales”) all from different directors. Not only is the star power here – everyone from Charlie Sheen, Christopher Lloyd, Danny De Vito, Harvey Keitel, Tim Robbins – but so are a bevy of name directors, including Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese and Tim Robbins. “Amazing Stories” holds up very well – make sure you check it out. Extras include twenty-minutes of deleted scenes.
