Lawrence scrubbing up for Fletch – Updated

Caffeinated Clint July 26, 2006 Movie News

“Scrubs” creator attached to franchise restart?

Sounds like the long-awaited “Fletch” redo is going to be somewhat of a “Scrubs” reunion.

Not only is Zach Braff the frontrunner to star as the young reporter – played by Chevy Chase in the two previous films, of which this won’t have any correlation to – but “Scrubs” creator Bill Lawrence is rumoured to be directing the film, says Coming Soon.

Lawrence is said to have inked a deal to helm the next two “Fletch” films with The Weinstein Company. Kevin Smith had previously been pegged to do the film.

As much as I would’ve loved to have seen what Smith would’ve coughed up, I’d be just as interested to see how well Lawrence pulls it off too – and I’m sure he will.

Quick Update:

Over at his official site, Zach Braff has confirmed that Bill Lawrence is going to be both Writing & Directing “Fletch Won”, but no mention of a follow up pic:

“There’s gonna be an exciting news break tomorrow, so I’ll go ahead and spoil it for anyone who’s awake at 1:34am pacific standard time. Bill Lawrence (the creator of Scrubs) has been hired by Harvey Weinstein to write and direct “Fletch Won” aka “Young Fletch”. For those of you that don’t know, the original Fletch was based on a series of books by Gregory McDonald. The book, “Fletch Won” goes back to the beginning a la “Batman Begins” and tells the story of how Fletch became Fletch. For those of you who’ve never seen it, go check out Chevy Chase in “Fletch”. It is a classic; you will laugh till your nipples chafe against your shirt.
I know the obvious question that follows, and the answer is: I don’t know yet. There are many things up in the air. Most important to me is directing my adaptation of “Open Hearts,” which I had planned to shoot next summer……. We’ll see what happens. But for now, I am very happy for Bill, cause he is the perfect man for the job. Not only is he one of the funniest people I’ve ever met, but he is a die-hard Fletch fan.”

To read that, and some funny stuff about his gay “Sims” characters, head over there.
