There are bigger, bawdy arm-cannoned men in director Kevin MacDonald’s future. The director of Russell Crowe’s latest, “State of Playâ€, is prepping a Roman Empire pic titled “The Eagle of the Ninth†which Jamie Bell and Channing Tatum are flirting with.
MacDonald, who also helmed “The Last King of Scotlandâ€, tells The Orlando Sentinel that “It takes place in Roman Britain in the second century. All the Romans will be American, all the Celts will be Scots and it’s about the friendship between a Roman legionary and his Celtic slave. They go on a journey upriver, kind of like Apocalypse Now, crossing Hadrian’s Wall, looking for the Lost Legion in the wilds of second century Scotland.â€
“Allegedly ‘lost legion.’â€, adds MacDonald. “It turns out the whole legend was based on a misreading of the text. Actually, they went to Germany. But we’ll forget about that, for our purposes!”
