Exclusive : Puss in Boots scribe talks

Antonio Banderas recently let the cat-out-of-the-bag – if you’ll excuse the pun – revealing the long-gestating “Puss in Boots” flick will indeed be an origin story. And by that, we assumed there wouldn’t be any place for the feline’s old buddies, Shrek, Princess Fiona or Donkey?

“No, all new characters – except Puss”, explains scribe David H.Steinberg. ‘’It doesn’t overlap with Shrek at all. Partly that was done to tell an original Puss story, but partly because we didn’t know what Shrek 4 (and now Shrek 5) were going to do with the characters and we couldn’t write conflicting storylines.’’

The hold up on the flick was due to the fact that “DreamWorks Animation only releases two pictures a year, so it had to get on the schedule”, explains the scribe. ‘’The release date is now set for 2012’’.

Steinberg has also been working on another family film, “Other People’s Wishes”, originally set to star Dwayne Johnson.

“Last I heard, Village Roadshow was very hot to put it into production but I don’t know if the Rock version is going forward or not.”

The film, which Steinberg was 1 of 5 writers on, “is about a guy who takes pennies from a wishing well and then the (other people’s) wishes start happening to him”.
