Darren Aronofsky’s long-gestating “Black Swan†– a supernatural thriller set in the world of New York Ballet – could be headed for the starting line, with Natalie Portman in talks to headline.
Universal were planning to make the film in 2007, but went cold on the idea. Since then, Aronofsky’s been pitching the project to various other studios – many of whom are interested, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The script, said to be in the vein of the Nicole Kidman chiller “The Othersâ€, centers on a veteran ballerina (Portman) who finds herself locked in a competitive situation with a rival dancer, with the stakes and twists increasing as the dancers approach a big performance. But it’s unclear whether the rival is a supernatural apparition or if the protagonist is simply having delusions.
If it’s picked up by a studio soonish – and likely it will be – “Black Swan†could be on the cards for a 2010 release. Aronofsky’s ‘other’ project, a remake of “RoboCop†is likely for 2011.
