Fret not Zombieland fans! Despite rumours piracy had stunted progress on the much-hankered-for sequel, seems thereâ€™s actually quite a â€“ excuse the cheesy pun – bit of life left in the franchise yet!
I had the chance to chat to â€œZombielandâ€ director Ruben Fleischer yesterday, who confirmed Sony are very interested in a â€œZombielandâ€ sequel. And heâ€™s ready to go. The original cast â€“ Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone & Abigail Breslin â€“ are also ready to slap another coffin dodger with the, er, â€˜ruleâ€™ book. In other words, unless the events of “2012” come true… we’ll be seeing a sequel in a couple of years.
But the most interesting development? Fleischer says the next film will likely be 3-D – yep, mother-hopping three-dimensional Woody vs. Zombie action!!
Believing â€œthe genre really lends itself to [3-D]â€, and convinced – via what weâ€™re hearing and seeing of â€œAvatarâ€ â€“ the technology is now there, Fleischerâ€™s very keen to throw a few zombie gizzards in our direction. “Dead” cool, right!?
(As for where the sequel will be set, Fleischer didnâ€™t say, but when we chatted to Woody Harrelson a few weeks back he said heâ€™d like to see it either set in Parisâ€¦ or on Broadway. Assuming itâ€™ll be none of those locationsâ€“ but somewhere just as surprising).
So when will â€œZombieland 3Dâ€ happen? Whenever â€œwe crack itâ€, says the filmmaker, indicating that they haven’t decided on the storyline yet.
Before then, Fleischer says he wouldn’t mind doing a romantic comedy – one without decaying lead characters.
It might still be a couple of years before we see â€œZombieland 2â€, but thereâ€™s another 3-D Zombie movie due out before then â€“ the Patrick â€˜My Bloody Valentine 3Dâ€™ Lussier helmed â€œCondition Dead 3Dâ€. Though in terms of tone, our (Iâ€™m a producer) filmâ€™s apples to Zombielandâ€™s oranges â€“ â€œCDâ€essentially Cameronâ€™s â€œAliensâ€ with the most ferocious bloody zombies youâ€™ll ever have seen; not comical â€“ Iâ€™m certain youâ€™ll love it just as much as Fleischerâ€™s fun flick.
