Entering into a crowded holiday weekend, three new movies were released in the top three spots. “Valentine’s Day” defeated the other films by a landslide to win the number one spot. It debuted with $63.1M over the four day weekend; with a budget of $52M this film is already profitable for Warner Brothers. Check out my positive review for the film here.
“Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief” came in second place with $38.7M over four days. The film was the only film in the top ten to drop 11% on Sunday from Saturday, which might be a problem for the $95M budgeted film in the coming weeks.
Universal’s “The Wolfman” was finally released after numerous delays to $35.6M gross. Reviews were mostly negative and with a budget of $150M, the film will most likely come in short. “Avatar” gained 26% this week bringing its gross to $28.8M beating out “Dear John” for fourth place. Its current total sits at $666.4M; a $750M final gross seems possible. But with the Oscars approaching, higher numbers may be possible for “Avatar.” “Dear John” got crushed by “Valentine’s Day” this weekend dropping to fifth place, grossing $18.2M. It still has a healthy total of $56.1M for the $25M pic, the $100M mark is possible, it will depend upon how much it drops next week.
“The Tooth Fairy” continued performing well, rising 20.8% grossing $8.0M bringing its total to $43.9M. “From Paris With Love” dropped to seventh place with $6.4M, total stands at a mere $17.5M after two weeks. “Edge of Darkness” grossed $5.6M bringing its total to $37.1M, a disappointing total of $50M might be possible.
“Crazy Heart” continued its successful wide run grossing $5.0M in week nine from only 1,005 theaters. Its total stands at $17.5M and it looks to make more once the Oscars are broadcast. “When in Rome” dropped to tenth place grossing $4.3M bringing its total to $26.9M, it should bring in about $35M total.
Next week, Scorsese’s “Shutter Island” is finally released starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
