Another Showgirls sequel?

Another Showgirls sequel?

Rena Riffel was originally reported to be starring in director Marc Vorlander’s “Showgirls : The Return”, reprising her role as Penny Hope from the Paul Verhoeven film. But Riffel was quick to correct Mr Vorlander’s press peeps declaring she had in fact turned down the film – remarking that it “was so horrifically graphic and out of the show’s original story theme that I needed to withdraw from those talks.”

In an interesting twist, and no doubt one that has Vorlander swearing in every which language, we were informed today that Riffel has instead got her own “Showgirls”-related project off the ground.

“Showgirl” is “a musical drama that follows a 30-something year old stripper on the bumpy road to fame, yearning to become the star dancer in a big glittering Ziegfeld show”, a press release from Media Giants tell us. “Rena is not only one of the stars, but she wrote the screenplay and is directing”.

“Showgirl will be my Yentl”, Rena explains.

“Twin Peaks” and “Mulholland Drive” fave Michael J.Anderson will co-star.

Ferosh Records will be working on the soundtrack.

MGM are apparently behind this “Showgirls” follow-up (I don’t believe they’re behind Vorlander’s film) suggesting this’ll be the better and significantly more ‘official’ of the follow-ups.

Riffel was one of the most memorable things about “Showgirls”, so count me in!

“Showgirl” is out 2012.
