I adore Mary McDonnell – and have ever since she burst onto the screen as ‘Stands with a Fist’ in Kevin Costner’s magnificent “Dances with Wolves” – but I gotta admit, I was a bit worried about her there for a while. After “Wolves”, McDonnell went on to star in such flicks as “Blue Chips” (that forgettable basketball movie with Nick Nolte), “Independence Day”, “Sneakers” (Oh how I love that film!) and “Mumford”… and then, well, sorta went quiet. I don’t know whether it’s because Hollywood didn’t know what to do with the woman (they usually don’t know what to do with any female actor over 35) or whether the Oscar nominated actress just wanted to take a break, whatever the case, I think it’s safe to say that “Battlestar Galactica” resurrected a career that was disproportionately on the dip. And now, of course, thanks to her rousing turn on the ‘best TV show SyFy ever produced (and likely will produce)’ everyone’s knocking on McDonnell’s door. Again.
Seems, like the rest of us, Wes Craven is a fan of President Laura Roslin too. He’s just cast the 58-year-old actress in “Scream 4”.
The Wrap, who revealed the casting this afternoon, don’t know who McDonnell will be playing in the horror sequel.
McDonnell is one of two newly-announced additions to the cast of the Kevin Williamson-written film. Alison Brie, best known for her role on Joel McHale’s sitcom “Community”, has also snagged a part. She will play “Sidney Prescott’s ambitious personal assistant who secretly envies her boss’ reluctant fame and fortune*”.
“Scream 4”, currently lensing in Michigan, stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Rory Culkin, Emma Roberts, Erik Knudsen, Marley Shelton, Anthony Anderson (I don’t know why Craven cast him – it’s off-putting having a “Scary Movie” cast member in a “Scream” film, no!?), Nico Tortorella, Adam Brody and Marielle Jaffe.
* Could they make it any more obvious who the victim is in this next chapter?
