The last time we saw the sexy blue-skinned mutant Mystique was in cinematic rectal exam “X-Men : The Last Stand”, now, much like the lass herself, the franchise is getting an appealing makeover.
“Kick-Ass” helmer Matthew Vaughn (with Skype input from producer and project shepherd Bryan Singer) is out to erase the sweaty nightmares of that last “X-Men” film with a funky reboot, “X-Men : First Class”. Title says it all really : It’s Billy Madison.. with sober freaks. As the press materials remind us it “charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men”.
Featuring a bravura cast including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence (“Winters Bone”), Kevin Bacon and Oliver Platt (“Flatliners” reunion right there!), Australia’s Rose Byrne and “Twilight” star Edi Cathegi, “First Class” dry humps the silver screen in June.
