Sony rebooting Zorro franchise

Caffeinated Clint October 7, 2011 Movie News

With the Antonio Banderas version now over ten years old, the suits are convinced the only way the “Zorro” franchise can go from here is…back.
Because cinemagoers suffer from the short-term memory problems of one, thus allowing only the beancounters at Sony to remember “Mask of Zorro” (1998) and it’s sequel “The Legend of Zorro” (2005), Sony has decided the best thing to do would be to start-over the ‘Zorro’ series.
And look, to be fair, “Zorro” allows itself to be rebooted or remade much easier than say, “A Nightmare on Elm Street” or “Fame”, because there’s already been umpteen films based on the masked charmer before Banderas made his debut as the character. Zorro is much like Tarzan in that there is a place for numerous interpretations of he and it. Still, will people miss Antonio Banderas in the lead role? Is it too soon to be overhauling the franchise – without a link to previous instalments?

Deadline
reports :

Sony Pictures has tapped TV scribes Matthew Federman & Stephen Scaia to write the studio’s reboot of the Zorro franchise, which won’t be a remake but an origin tale of the comic book icon based on the 2005 Isabel Allende novel.

These two guys apparently write for “Warehouse 13″ and “Jericho” and served as supervising producers on another reboot, “Charlie’s Angels”. The fact that they’re supervising the shitness of that putrid redo is enough to make a masked man’s sword go a tad wobbly.
