A couple of weeks back, just before the Melbourne Cup, I spoke to flaxen-haired Aussie actor Stephen Curry – about, not coincidentally, his new film “The Cup” – about what he was going to do now that his days of galloping are behind him.
His answer? He was aiming to bowl a few out.
The amiable actor, whose credits include Greg McLean’s “Rogue” and Working Dog’s classic “The Castle”, said he was going to star in a comedy about a loser cricket team that heads to India to play.
Madman Entertainment has officially announced the project. Titled “Save your Legs!”, and based on the documentary of the same name, the coming-of-age ‘bromance’ flick follows three long-time friends who try to play for Australia.
“I Love You Too”‘s Brendan Cowell and “Balibo” star Damon Gameau will co-star. Cowell also wrote the screenplay. Boyd Hicklin directs.
Here’s the official synopsis :
For Edward Teddy Brown, its not just the end of Summer; its the end of an era. In a desperate bid to wind back the clock and cling to his childhood dreams, Teddy leads his two best mates and their cowboy cricket club on an audacious tour of India, winning friends but losing matches all the way.
Due for release in late 2012 by Madman Entertainment, Paul Wiegard, managing director for Madman said: “Madman are thrilled to be working with our very own Nick Batzias alongside one of Australia’s finest producers Robyn Kershaw and first time feature director Boyd Hicklin. Whilst Boyd is little known in the film world, in the commercial world Boyd is renowned for his dynamic and creative energy. Boyd’s passion for this story stems from his experience with the actual Abbotsford Anglers Cricket Club who took themselves off to India way back when….only someone with Boyd’s guts, humour and great spirit can now deliver this film to audiences both here and abroad.”
The film begins production in a couple of weeks here in Melbourne before continuing it’s shoot in India.
With the terrific job Cowell did on “The Slap” and but, of course, “Love My Way”, I’d say this is going to be one of the Aussie film highlights of 2012.
