Gael Garcia Bernal will play the masked vigilante Zorro in Fox’s new reboot of the swashbuckler classic, says Variety.
“Zorro Reborn” won’t be set in a classic Mexican setting, as per the other films featuring the sword-fighting hero, but rather a post apocalyptic-wasteland. And unlike the other incarnations of the character, Bernal’s version will be somewhat of an anti-hero – a revenge-seeking rebel that shrouds his phizog.
Bernal (“The Motorcycle Diaries”, “The King”) joins Glenn Gers, Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy on the project, who are scripting. No director has been announced as yet.
Sony, who produced the Antonio Banderas-starring “Zorro” movies, are also doing their own cinematic revamp of the character.
