Just spoke to Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy & Chris O’Dowd at ”The Sapphires” premiere pre-party. They’re overwhelmed to be here in Cannes!
The movie was picked up by The Weinstein Company last week. Didn’t see the trailer? Here it is :

Was also at the “Lawless” press conference a day or so back.
Half the people on stage were Australian!
Tom Hardy said he has never seen ”The Godfather” or ”On The Waterfront”! Someone get him the DVDs tout suite…
I love Nick Cave. He’s got straight up Aussie humor… To a journalist who kept asking crazy questions “he’s a sonofabitch this guy”
John Hillcoat says it wasn’t just about casting Aussies, but there’s a lot of great talent coming from Oz & they were family on set
Amazing that Jessica Chastain had two films at Cannes last year and two this year!

Film Verdicts

“Rust & Bone” : absolutely heartbreaking, need a minute to digest it all. Marion Cotillard is incredible.
“Moonrise Kingdom : a load of fun for Wes Anderson fans! Full of his signature quirky style, fab 60s production design & great cast. Enjoyed.
“Beasts of the Southern Wild : …is a little piece of magic. Wow, my fave so far. The little girl who carries the whole film is something else!
“Lawless” : brutal & intense. Convinced that Tom Hardy & Jessica Chastain can do no wrong. Guy Pearce is a great bad guy!

Finally, Will Smith slapped a reporter on the red carpet… watch!

About Alicia Malone

Alicia Malone is a Film Reporter, TV Host, Producer, Writer, Editor, and all around movie geek. She developed her taste for film at a young age, spending many a heady Friday night pajama-clad at the video store, picking out her 7 films for 7 days for $7. Bargain! While at school she created a Film Club, electing herself President. Eventually the School Principal asked her not to get up in assembly to talk about movies anymore.
