George Clooney heads to Cuba

George Clooney will direct “The Yankee Comandante”, a Cuban military drama for Focus Features.

The Hollywood Reporter says the Smokehouse production – the shingle Clooney runs with Grant Heslov – is based on an article published in The New Yorker that told of “the saga of William Alexander Morgan, who became the only foreigner other than Che Guevara to reach the title of Comandante in Cuba. His actions caught the eye of U.S. FBI director J. Edgar Hoover.”

The trade says Clooney, busy filming “Gravity” at the moment, will likely first direct a Nazi heist movie called “The Monument Men” before helming the “Yankee” picture.
