Veronica Who? 5 Other Interesting Movie Projects on Kickstarter!

With the success of the “Veronica Mars Movie” campaign – something like 2 million dollars was generated by fans in the space of a few hours – a couple of weeks ago, traffic’s going to be getting a welcome spike over at Kickstarter. What was once a crowd sourcing option for the likes of graphic novelists, short filmmakers and children’s authors , is in the midst of transitioning into something much bigger. Obviously, as more and more people begin to use Kickstarter, and paying punters begin to be spoilt for choice (to what to put their hard-earned cash into), the effectiveness of the site will begin to wane, but until then there’s endless possibilities for the cash-strapped genius. Things that had previously been stamped DOA – like the “Veronica Mars” movie! – suddenly get a new lease on life thanks to a development board that’s made up purely of enthusiastic fans and people that genuinely want to see others succeed in their mission to bring creativity to the screen. While “Veronica Mars” – which starts filming mid-year, thanks to you guys! – is inarguably the biggest project currently looking for money (yes, you can still donate; the more money it gets, the more likely it is we’ll get a Logan nude scene), there’s quite a few other very interesting projects on Kickstarter that deserve a look.

Here’s 5 I’ve come across :

Bill the The Galactic Hero
Needs : $100,000
Who is in it? No attached cast.
Who is making it? Alex Cox (Director), Jon Davison (Producer)
What is it? This will be done. Guaranteed. Such an intriguing project, and some really exciting people involved in it – namely “Repo Man” director Alex Cross and “Robocop” producer Jon Davison. ”The creator of Repo Man and Sid & Nancy directs a feature comedy based on Harry Harrison’s classic anti-war science fiction novel. A feature-length science fiction comedy set in the far reaches of our galaxy, as humans wage war against a reptilian alien species, known as Chingers. It is extremely low budget, and relatively high concept.”

Lady Bug
Needs : $9,230
Who is in it? Christopher Showerman, Rachel Cairns, Claudia Wells
Who is making it? Brooks Campbell
What is it? A psychological thriller, said to carry the tone of movies like “American Psycho” and “Drive”, with a couple of well-known actors onboard, namely “Back to the Future” star Claudia Wells. The storyline sounds good (very “Dead Calm”) : “LADY BUG is a Psychological Thriller/Character study of a chemically dependent woman who loses control of her life after her children and Afghanistan war veteran husband leave her to start anew in a far off city. Willing to do anything to get to her children, she stows away on a private boat only to find herself face to face with a suicidal maniac.”

Hero Punk
Needs :
$28,500
Who is in it?
Jamil Vaughn, Damien Jade Warren, Ryder Darcy
Who is making it?
Kanen Flowers
What is it? :
Wouldn’t at all be surprised if this gets its financing, superhero films are all the rage these days – and what better than an original concept, featuring original superhero characters that Marvel or DC don’t control!? ”In 2042, a former Bounty Hunter assembles a team of superheroes to fight against an alien invasion and the mysterious Enclave.”

Possessions
Needs :
$614,732
Who is in it?
Jamil Vaughn, Damien Jade Warren, Ryder Darcy
Who is making it?
William O’Leary
Synopsis :
“A great genre based film from William O’Leary (HOT SHOTS, HOME IMPROVEMENT, BULL DURHAM) with an award winning makeup effects company.” It doesn’t really say what the film is, or what it’s about, but having worked on a bunch of good movies in his time as an actor, you’d think “Hot Shots!” actor William O’Leary would know how to make one.

Dirty Dealing 3D
Needs :
$614,732
Who is in it?
C.Thomas Howell, Michael Madsen, Frida Farrell
Who is making it?
Robin Hood Films
What is It? :
It’s essentially a finished film – the producers just need a bit more cash for some fancy sprinkles to lay atop. “Dirty Dealing is 95% complete and will be finished by 2nd Quarter 2013. The picture is “in the can” and the editing is done, now we’re just finishing up the audio, music and some 3D elements and we’re there! The additional money needed is for some final post production elements, a 3D premiere, and a P&A (promotional funds) for a limited theatrical run in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York and hopefully other cities.” You’d think with C.Thomas Howell and Michael Madsen in it, people will be willing to donate.

Orc Wars
Needs :
$20,000
Who is in it?
Rusty Joiner, Masiela Lusha, Isaac Singleton
Who is making it?
Arrowstorm Entertainment
What is It? :
“An action-packed fantasy film featuring a Marine battling an army of bloodthirsty orcs, a sinister witch and their massive dragon.” Very modestly budgeted film – the fourth of its type from Arrowstorm Entertainment, who seem to have a good handle on these sorts of film – and one that should attract an audience, let alone a good distribution deal, so I dare say this will find finishing funds.
