“The Grapes of Wrath” Redux.

One might have suspected this day would’ve come a lot sooner – what with the novel’s 75th anniversary just around the corner. Maybe Steven Spielberg’s had to wait that long to find a spare slot in his schedule? (With the amount of projects listed as ‘in development’ on his IMDB page, that wouldn’t be surprising).

Spielberg has initiated talks with the estate of author John Steinbeck, hoping to produce a new film version of the classic book – it was previously made into a film in 1940 (with John Ford directing) – for DreamWorks.

Deadline, who have the report, don’t have an ETA on the project but remind us that Spielberg’s already committed to directing the movie “American Sniper” starring Bradley Cooper, which will occupy most of the next year or so.

Maybe it’ll happen after that…? (maybe it won’t happen at all, as many of Spielberg’s intended projects don’t. Spoilt for choice that man!)

Here’s the original synopsis for the book :

A portrait of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless, of one man’s fierce reaction to injustice, and of one woman’s stoical strength, the novel captures the horrors of the Great Depression and probes into the very nature of equality and justice in America. Although it follows the movement of thousands of men and women and the transformation of an entire nation, The Grapes of Wrath is also the story of one Oklahoma family, the Joads, who are driven off their homestead and forced to travel west to the promised land of California. Out of their trials and their repeated collisions against the hard realities of an America divided into Haves and Have-Nots evolves a drama that is intensely human yet majestic in its scale and moral vision, elemental yet plainspoken, tragic but ultimately stirring in its human dignity.
