There have been so many fantastic sports movies over the years that it’s impossible to say definitively which are the best. Nonetheless, we have pulled out five that we think are up there for a fantastic combination of story, sporting action and passion.

Rocky

This could be Sly Stallone’s finest moment, perhaps, playing a debt collector who starts out as a club fighter and works his way up through the rankings. The 1976 film sees the underdog fighter eventually getting a shot at the world heavyweight championship, and is still mentioned by pundits on betfair to this day.

Field of Dreams

Kevin Costner has made a ton of movies, but this 1996 film is one of his best for its combination of mystery, adventure and magic – all set around the game of baseball. Iowa corn farmer Ray (Costner) is convinced by voices he hears in the corn to build a baseball diamond in his field. ‘If you build it, he will come’ works a treat as the ghosts of the Chicago Black Sox turn up for a game.

Moneyball

One of Brad Pitt’s finest performances for a while as the general manager of Oakland A, a baseball team that’s struggling to maintain its position as it has no budget compared to all the big teams. Billy Beane (Pitt) is a former player who uses an unheard of strategy to pick players and turns the team’s fortunes around. The fact that this is based on truth has made it even more popular with fans on the Betfair forums.

He Got Game

Spike Lee directed this 1998 release, which starred Denzel Washington as Jake – a convict who’s on parole. Jake has been given a week to persuade his son Jesus – the most wanted high school basketball player in the States – to join the governor’s alma mater. Jake’s task is not easy as he had been convicted of murdering Jesus’ mother and his son refuses to speak to him.

Kingpin

A 1996 comedy fest, this is kind of a sports movie! This Farelly brothers movie is a laugh a minute, slapstick and farce comedy starring Bill Murray, Woody Harrelson, and Randy Quaid. The plot, lauded by Betfair, focuses on the efforts of a star bowler who has lost his hand trying to make his fortune through a new prodigy.
