Following several weeks filming on location at Versailles in France, ”The Moon and The Sun”, an adult fable based on Vonda McIntyre’s Nebular Award-winning novel, has entered the second phase of its shoot in Melbourne, Australia.
”The Moon and The Sun” tells the tale of Louis XIV whose quest for immortality leads him to capture a mermaid in order to steal her life force. At the same time, the monarch’s illegitimate daughter, Marie-Josephe, is brought to court in order to pay off war debts. Complications arise when Marie-Josephe forms bonds with not only the mysterious mermaid but also the handsome sailor who was her captor.
With a stellar cast led by Pierce Brosnan as Louis XIV, The Sun King, the film also stars Academy Award winner William Hurt (”Kiss of the Spider Woman”), Benjamin Walker (”Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”, Ron Howard’s ”Heart of the Sea”), Kaya Scodelario (“Skins,” Fox’s upcoming ”The Maze Runner”), Ben Lloyd-Hughes (”Divergent”), Pablo Schreiber (“The Wire,” “Orange is the New Black”) and features Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing (”X-Men: Days of Future Past”) as the mermaid.
This lavish production showcases some of Australia’s premier artistic talent including Oscar-winning costume designer Lizzy Gardiner (”The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”, ”Ghost Rider”), production designer Michelle McGahey (”Killer Elite”, ”I, Frankenstein”) and Oscar-nominated editor John Gilbert (”The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring”, ”The Bank Job”), with VFX work by Jamy Wheless (”Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”, ”Transformers”) and John Helms (”Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith”, ”Eragon”).
Produced by Bill Mechanic (”Coraline”, former Chairman and CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment), James Pang (”Painted Skin” 1 & 2), Wei Han and Paul Currie (”Rampart”, ”One Perfect Day”) and directed by Sean McNamara (”Soul Surfer”).
Bill Mechanic says, “We have assembled a stellar cast and some of the best artistic and technical talent in the world to bring this book to life. The Moon and The Sun will hopefully create a lasting, iconic image of mermaids, now and forever.”
Presented by Mechanic’s Pandemonium Films and Cosmos Filmed Entertainment in conjunction with Bliss Media, Lightstream Pictures and Boarside Productions Limited. Independently financed, The Moon and The Sun will be distributed by Focus Features in the USA while international sales will be handled by Good Universe.
