With Arnold Schwarzenegger SMSing “not interested” (he was offered the chance to reprise his role as ‘Dutch’ from the original film, who in this film would’ve been the lead character’s father, but didn’t think there was enough meat on his plate to tuck into so opted out), Shane Black’s “The Predator” needed a new link to the original if it were going to go out of it’s way – which it seems to be – to remind fans of the 1987 movie that the new film was a direct follow-up, with all the tension and cool of the first films – as opposed to the cheap and nastisness of the spin-off films, and a carry-over storyline. And it’s nifty.
Jake Busey has revealed he’s playing the son of father Gary Busey’s “Predator 2” character Peter Keyes in the upcoming sequel.
Speaking with The Red Booth, the actor said :
“[Shane Black] called me and he said ‘Hey, you wanna do this movie? We don’t have money for you but it’ll be a fun thing to come play and be your father’s son.’ And so as much as I have followed in my Dad’s footsteps career-wise, this is like really following in his footsteps by playing a character who is the son of the character he played. And I don’t think there would be any other forum where I would do that. I think this is the one thing.”
Gary Busey played Keyes in Stephen Hopkins’ 1990 film. Reports have suggested that the Keyes role was written into the film as a replacement (funnily enough) for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ‘Dutch’, who would’ve appeared in that slot. The character scored quite the memorable on-screen death at the hands of the title character so chances are Keyes Jr is going to have revenge on his mind.
“The Predator”, written by Black and Fred Dekker, stars Boyd Holbrook, Jacob Tremblay, Olivia Munn, Keegan-Michael Key, Edward James Olmos, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Alfie Allen, and Yvonne Strahovski. The film is due August 3, 2018.
