Abrams : How Star Trek 4 will handle Yelchin’s death

This weekend the late Anton Yelchin makes his final appearance as Chekov in the Justin Lin-directed “Star Trek Beyond”.

Needless to say, since his tragic death earlier this month, Yelchin won’t be back for the recently-announced fourth film in the J.J Abrams’ rebooted series.

In the wake of the news, the difficult question of what to do with Yelchin’s Chekov will now need to be asked.

Producer Abrams tells Postmedia Network that, it’s early days so he’s not quite sure how they’re going to handle it yet, though one thing’s for sure they won’t be recasting Chekov.

“I would say there’s no replacing him. There’s no recasting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better.”

The possibility of killing off the character – in a scenario that plays out between the events of “Star Trek Beyond” and the upcoming film – has been discussed but Abrams isn’t sure he wants to go that way.

“I have thought about it, we’re working on it, and it’s too early to talk about it” says Abrams.
