Sounds like the brass on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” are convinced that the upcoming finale of the series’ fifth season is the show’s end.
“We are in process [of writing the finale],” co-showrunner Jed Whedon told TVLine on Saturday at the show’s Episode 100 celebration.
Added co-showrunner Maurisa Tancharoen: “We know what it is.”
“Yeah, we’re ready for if this is the end”, Whedon says, confirming that the episode wraps up the series – should this be it. “We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way. We can certainly pivot and there are certain things that we’re putting in that at the last minute could be adjusted, but we know at the end we’re not moving off that mark. We’re going to do what we were planning to do, and I think that it’ll be thrilling either way.”
It’s, of course, up to ABC whether or not “S.H.I.E.L.D” – which has been on break for a month – returns for a sixth season, and their decision likely hangs on whether the twelve remaining episodes left to air do anything ratings-wise.
“We can certainly pivot and there are certain things that we’re putting in that at the last minute could be adjusted,” Whedon said. “But we know at the end we’re not moving off that mark. We’re going to do what we were planning to do, and I think that it’ll be thrilling either way.”
The series is currently averaging 2.3 million total viewers and a 0.6 demo rating in Live+Same Day numbers, ranking it last in current ABC dramas only beating “Once Upon a Time” (which is now in its own final season) in the demographic. Having said that, the show usually gets a bump from Live+7 DVR playback from the demo.
“Agents of S.H.I.E.LD” returns to the air on Friday – with Disney spunk Dove Cameron joining the cast as Ruby, the daughter of the villainous General Hale (Catherine Dent).
“Ruby idolizes her mother in a lot of ways, there’s definitely a lot of love there, but what would happen to the daughter of such a villainous character?”, the actress tells EW. “It’s not something that’s just going to weigh lightly on her, so we’ll see how that unfolds as the season goes on.”
The “Descendants” star says it’s a role unlike any she’s played before. “I can’t really embellish on why it’s different than anything I’ve done, but it definitely is.”
