The woolly-bottomed hunter for the throne is returning to the small screen for the first time in a decade.
Conan the Barbarian, better known as one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s signature movie characters, last graced the tele in 1997 as the headline act of the USA Network’s “Conan the Adventurer” series.
Now Amazon, the crowd responsible for recently porting another literary and film hero Jack Ryan back to TV, want to bring the Barbarian back to ‘Prime’ time.
According to Deadline, the new version will stick closer to Robert E.Howard’s books, as opposed to the Schwarzenegger movies, as it tells the story of a warrior who “wanders the mysterious and treacherous world of civilization where he searches for purpose in a place that rejects him as a mindless savage.”
The behind-the-scenes brass include “Game of Thrones” alum Miguel Sapochnik, the legendary Warren Littlefield and “Colony” creative Ryan Condal, alongside Pathfinder Media and Endeavor Content.
While numerous studios and filmmakers have flirted with bringing Arnold Schwarzenegger back for another “Conan the Barbarian” movie (the “King Conan” iteration the most renowned of those projects), the project seems to be on indefinite pause. Whether the TV series will revive interest in the movie series or see the producers abandoning the movie altogether remains to be seen.
1997’s “Conan the Adventurer”, based on the Robert E.Howard created character who gained fame in literary form before he debuted in the multiplex, starred Arnie’s old mate Ralf Möller in the Conan role. That incarnation would last only 22 episodes. More recently, a new “Conan” film, released in 2011, starred “Game of Thrones” alum Jason Momoa in the title role.
