As the DC Cinematic Universe continues to expand, so does the number of A-list stars who join the superhero genre. And with films like the “Wonder Woman” standalone next year having already established a director, tone, and lead cast, there are others such as “Aquaman” that still has very little known about it. Warner Bros. and DC are doing a relatively similar structure to Marvel by releasing both epics like “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice“, set for release next week, and the two-part “Justice League” as well as more minor entries like the previously mentioned.
Director James Wan is set to helm “Aquaman” with Jason Mamoa as the title character. And over the past few months rumors have been swimming around about who would play Mera, Aquaman’s love interest and future Queen of Atlantis. Amber Heard (“The Danish Girl”) was at the head of the talks for the prized role, and and now she’s officially attached to the underwater tale. This will be Heard’s first real blockbuster in her rise to well-deserved stadom, having done more lesser-known films like “The Rum Diary”, and last year’s “Magic Mike XXL”. So the actress will finally have a chance to break into the bedrock of Hollywood, especially since she will appear in the standalone as well as both “Justice League” films right out of the gate.
And while this type of news is reassuring that the standalone is finally making waves, there’s not been any substantial plot details revealed. Considering Wan’s horror background, we could be seeing one of the darker entries in DC’s catalog. But with Heard now aboard, there’s bound to something announced about it within the next few months. Mamoa is set to make his debut as the character in “Dawn of Justice”, so there could easily be some information given out about the character’s future during that film.
“Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” will be released March 25, 2016, and Heard will enter the DC Cinematic Universe starting with “Justice League Part 1” on November 17, 2017, then “Aquaman” on July 27, 2018, followed by “Justice League Part 2” on June 14, 2019.
