Amy Schumer to play Barbie

In a case of genius casting, Sony is in negotiations with comedian Amy Schumer to headline the upcoming live action “Barbie” film.

Schumer will play Barbie who lives in Barbieland along with a whole lot of other Barbies (no seriously, I’m not joking…) According to Deadline, Schumer will play a character who lives in Barbieland, among all of the various Barbie characters beloved by doll collectors (there are dolls covering over 180 careers). In a fish-out-of-water story reminiscent of films like Splash and Big, Schumer’s Barbie gets kicked out, basically because she’s not perfect enough, is a bit eccentric and doesn’t quite fit the mold. She then goes on an adventure in the real world and by the time she returns to Barbieland to save it, she has gained the realization that perfection comes on the inside, not the outside, and that the key to happiness is belief in oneself, free of the obligation to adhere to some unattainable standard of perfection.

Given her status as a role model for female empowerment, especially for young girls, Schumer is arguably the perfect choice to play the fish-out-of-water Barbie – a brand which has come under fire over the years for it’s portrayal of the impossibly proportioned female body.

The script hails from Hilary Winston although it is expected that Schumer and her sister Kim Caramele will do a rewrite. The search is now on for a director before the PG film goes before the cameras in spring. Based on the lucrative Mattel toyline, Sony is aiming for a global release in the summer of 2018.
