Aquaman opened in China this weekend – how did it do?

“Aquaman” opened in China this past weekend – a full week before it opens elsewhere (I wouldn’t have thought that the smartest idea, due to piracy concerns, but seems the studio may be onto something here) – and snagged a ridiculously colossal $94 million opening.  That’s the biggest-ever opening for a WB film in China, which is gradually becoming the biggest movie marketplace in the world. If the film opens stateside with those kind of numbers, it would be bigger than every other film not with “Star Wars” in it’s title. Obviously the film will need to do just as good in other markets (particularly the U.S, where it opens this week), but the fact it’s such a bonza-success in China takes the pressure off fears the James Wan-directed film will flounder in North America.

“Aquaman” hits the U.S this Friday and Australia on Boxing Day.
