Ask Clint (December 4, 2011)

Thanks for your questions, suggestions, rants, raves and death threats this week. Remember, you can contact me here whenever things get you down.

Just watched the original “Casper” movie with Bill Pullman with my kids. Also got out one of the direct to video sequels (had Hilary Duff in it). They doing another more Casper movies, so I can hire them for the kid?
Rob

Rob,
No more direct-to-video sequels, no. I’m hearing instead that the friendly ghost will be getting his own big screen reboot. It’s unlikely, sorry to say, that Hilary Duff will be back as Wendy the witch in it though. Commiserations, sir.

Look Who’s Talking was going to be remade at one stage. And with Travolta? Hope that’s a bad rumor?
Sally wallach

Sorry, baby Mikey is indeed set to stain a few throw-overs again. Sometime. And Not with Vinnie Barbarino, or Rebecca from “Cheers”. Or even Twink Caplan. But yes, with talking babies and
– at one stage, though I don’t know if it’s still the case after his latest didn’t deliver the big bucks the studio had hoped – a certain ex-sketch series player who now strictly appears in high-concept comedy clunkers. This Sandman was apparently circling the flick (not sure whether he’d be playing the talking tot or the talking tots dad) as recently as a couple of months back at the insistence of Sony, but it’s possible the ghost of Abe Vigoda has put an end to the nightmarish idea by spirit stealing the treatment from Ms Pascals office.
Thinking about it though, I imagine they’d have wanted the crazy golfing Gilmore guy to supply the voice of the baby. He talks good baby.

Clint
Wasn’t someone else originally going to do “Top Gun” before Tom Cruise? Any ideas coffee man?
Richard Van Kruen

Richard,
Yup, Matthew Modine was initially offered the role of “Maverick. Modine passed in favour of headlining Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket”. Merit over Money? Not so much; Modine passed over politics. “As a kid, I was always taught the Russians were the bad guys, the Chinese would destroy the world”, Modine said in an interview a couple of years back, when asked why he didn’t do Tony Scott’s huge money maker. “.. Then early in my career I was at the Berlin film festival and a guy took me to East Berlin. I saw a monument to Russian soldiers who died fighting Germany. The fact Russia was our ally in World War II was not part of my basic education. I met Russian soldiers and they were no different to my brothers who’d served in Vietnam. We shared cigarettes, they gave me pins from their uniforms. When I got home, the Top Gun script was waiting for me and I knew I just couldn’t perpetuate the lie.” Modine has nothing against corrupt Yankees and steroid-users though, he’s in “The Dark Knight Rises”.

That new “Phantom” movie that the Aussie guys were going to make. Any casting rumours?
LoungeLizard

Lounge,
Treat Williams to return as the villain, Kristy Swanson the dame. I’m joking. Sam Worthington is still atop of the producers’ wish list for the role of the Ghost Who Walks but I don’t believe he’s officially been approached. I’d say they’re still sourcing monies for the picture.

Watched ”Predators” on cable. Wasn’t there an Arnold cameo?
Joel

Joel,
In Robert Rodriguez’s initial script for the film Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character Dutch appears in the final pages, emerging from a spaceship with the predators.
By the time Rodriguez got around to making the movie Schwarzenegger was Governor and no longer making movies. That doesn’t mean he didn’t run the idea by Arnold – I can tell you that he did indeed – but Rodriguez never really expected he’d have the time to do a movie while patrolling the California beaches.
“I had worked with Arnold on the original script back in the day and I had spoken with him about it… In my script he was the entire film and now he was Governor (of California) so I was like, ‘I know we can’t get him for the lead and I don’t even think we can get him for a cameo.’ We did entertain the idea of where could we place him but… we had such an erratic schedule, we never would have been able to pinpoint like you would need to with somebody in his position.”
There’s always a sequel, I guess? Though at this stage Rodriguez hasn’t been asked to do one, which could suggest Fox are letting the dread-locked rogue rest for a while or are planning, god forbid, another reboot.

Clint,
Two words : Grease 3.
Madam

Madam,
Well, technically speaking that’s one word and one number. Whatever the case, Paramount Famous – the label behind those DTV sequels to “Without a Paddle” and “Road trip” – have a third “Grease” in production. I think it’s safe to say it ain’t the same “Grease 3” that would’ve seen John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John reprise their roles of Danny and Sandy, now proud parents to a couple of gifted singers.I’m guessing this “Grease” will feature an all-new cast, and maybe if were lucky a cameo to be one of the lesser-expense original stars, like Didi Conn (Frenchie) or a CGI Sid Caesar. I’ll see if I can get an update on the project though.

Anne Hathaway will suck as Catwoman. Who else did they consider?
Goon

Goon,
A slew of young actresses tested for the role – Rachel Weisz (who would’ve been amazing), Rhona Mitra (“24”), Kate Beckinsale, Sienna Miller, Scarlett Johansson (she ended up getting a deal with Marvel; otherwise I’d say she might have gotten the gig), Tanit Phoenix (“Death Race 2”). I think you’ll find The Dark Knight Rises won’t include that sucking scene you’re so worried about, producers are hoping for a PG-13, after all.

Yo bud,
”Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol”. Can you tell me if it’s any good?
Lane

Lane,
No I can’t. Well, not unless you’re following me on Twitter and check in after midnight tonight.

Clint,
The new Mission Impossible film looks crap. The poster looks like a poor man’s oceans eleven. What’s the bet it’s going to be a bad film like Mission Impossible II?
Gab

Gab,
Read previous question and my answer. Follow suit.

Clint,
Why didn’t they ever make the Rules of Attraction sequel spin off called Glitterati? You should have included it in your 50 more sequels that didn’t happen.
Chris Walls

Chris,
I didn’t include it because they did. And that’s all I can say about that. Next.

What’s the link between Warren Beatty and Shirley MacLaine? She always seems to talk about him as if she knows him better than most movie stars in Hollywood do.
Jack Ayens

Jack,
She’s his sister. She has a right to speak about his sex life at “Steel Magnolias” conventions.

Guys,
Any ideas what tv show might be turned Into a movie next. What do you predict?
Udon

Udon,
Hearing rumblings of a “Golden Girls” movie. Whether it gets any further than a whiteboard somewhere is to be seen. In the meantime, there’s always the long-gestating “Greatest American Hero” movie, “The Fall Guy”, “The Jetsons”, “Knight Rider”, “The Six Billion Dollar Man”, “Battlestar Galactica” and “The Man from U.N.C.L.E”, to name but a few up-and-coming big screen makeovers.

hey clint i heard about the new man of steel movie which looks really awsome i heard tho that there going to do man of steel 2 do you think thats possbile there going pull off the sequels tho i think they should keep the same writers david s. goyer and christopher nolan i think thats what makes a great superman franchise is when keep same writers and director zack synder do you think he would return make the sequel tho that be awsome man holden
Holden

There’s no “Man of Steel 2” until there’s a big bag of money marked “Man of Steel Returns”.

hey clint when you watch the ending of the three musketeers it looks like leads to a sequel tho i think that be so cool if leads to franchise tho what do you think i think that would be awsome tho of part 2 and part 3 with the same cast in it tho with paul w.s. anderson makeing that movie again that would be awsome tho
Holden

Do I have to watch the entire film or can I skip to the last few minutes?

Clint,
Haven’t heard much about the new “Dallas” series since you showed some footage. Imagine since you’re a kid of the 1980s like me youd be looking forward to this one. Is it still on though? Because I know Larry Hagman is sick?
Alonzo

Alonzo,
TNT’s “Dallas” reboot is still very much on. Hagman isn’t well but he’s also only going to be popping up in this series occasionally so it’s not like he’ll be required on set every week. I believe he’s in the pilot and maybe a couple of episodes after that, as J.R, but it’s yet to be decided when he will pop up again. And yeah, I guess I am looking forward to it – though the whole “Melrose Place” reboot failure has put me off it a bit – if only because it is Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray back in their trademark roles, but I’m also skeptical.
Here’s the new trailer TNT has released :
