Ayer returns for Gotham City Sirens

Margot Robbie’s recently hatched idea to team her Harley Quinn with some of Batman lore’s other femme fatales is inching closer to a real thing, with The Hollywood Reporter announcing today that the project has both a title and director.

David Ayer, who directed Robbie’s first go-round as the Joker’s woman in “Suicide Squad”, will direct “Gotham City Sirens” -inspired by the 2009 DC title of the same name.

The comic teamed Quinn with Gotham locals Catwoman, Talia al Ghul, and Poison Ivy, among others. Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who penned the “Tomb Raider” remake and Warners’ “Sherlock Holmes 3” is writing the screenplay.

Robbie, an executive producer on the project, reprises the ditzy Quinn.

Though not a critical darling, “Suicide Squad” made enough gold pretzels to sustain not only the Robbie-starring spin-off but also a sequel, which Warners are said to be eyeing next. A spin-off featuring Will Smith’s Deadshot character is said to be also a possibility, but because that character doesn’t wear skimpy shorts and get about in a bra for a quarter of the film, they’re sticking to the surer-thing at this stage.
