Ben Affleck to play Batman in Man of Steel sequel

“WHAAAAAT? [But] I think I can get behind this though!”, expresses Moviehole’s Mandy Griffiths, via the email she feverishly sent over to me that included the big casting news in question.

And while Mandy goes gangnam style with surprise, I’ll tell you, my eyes are also doing a pop-out but I’m also quite excited about Ben Affleck being cast as the new Batman.

Affleck, though not unfamiliar to the world of superheroes, having played ‘Daredevil’ on the big screen and later, ‘Superman’ actor George Reeves (in “Hollywoodland”), is so in-demand these days, not only as an actor but as a filmmaker, that he’s known to pass on anything than doesn’t automatically scream ‘must do’ to him. Playing the Dark Knight on screen isn’t something one would’ve assumed Affleck would’ve felt a need to do. Still, score for us, right!?

The “Runner, Runner” star does have a good relationship with Warner Bros though, and at one stage was considering directing their ‘Superman’ reboot. He was even briefly linked to the role of the Man of Steel.

Affleck, ironically, will make his debut as the new Batman – said to be in his forties, grizzled, and a veteran of the crime fighting scene – in “Man of Steel 2”. Henry Cavill reprises the role of Superman from this year’s “Man of Steel”.

“Man of Steel 2”, with Zack Snyder at the helm, will open July 17, 2015.
