Bernero, Fox bringing The Punisher to TV

A while back – I think it was Comic Con, from memory – the bigwigs at Marvel announced that they’d reaquired the film and television rights to “The Punisher” and were planning to relaunch Frank Castle on home soil. Word at the time was that the studio was considering bringing the revenge-seeking big guy to TV.

That’s now confirmed. Marvel has inked a deal with Fox for a “Punisher” TV series.

Deadline reports this afternoon that former ”Criminal Minds” showrunner Ed Bernero is in charge of the TV series adaptation which will be “an hour-long procedural with a Marvel signature and a new take on one of the comic book giant’s iconic characters, Frank Castle, a rising star detective with the New York Police Department who moonlights as the vigilante Punisher, seeking justice for those the system has failed.”

Bernero will executive produce the series with Marvel.

Marvel’s quickly making roads into television. 2012 will see the premiere of another Marvel comic turned TV series, “The Incredible Hulk” with Guillermo Del Toro producing.

Wonder who’ll they bring in to play Frank Castle this time ’round? Think there’s any chance – especially if “Hung” gets hung soon – of Thomas Jane returning to the role? Maybe Ray Stevenson? Or should they find some fresh-faced pup to play the cop cum vigilante?
