Bumblebee sequel : Cybertron or Optimus Prime movie?

If “Bumblebee” is a big commercially as it’s due to be critically, expect a sequel to be fast-tracked – well, as fast-tracked as a film requiring four trillion effects shots and an eighteen-month marketing roll-out map can possibly be.

Travis Knight, director of the “Transformers” spin-off, seems to already have ideas for a follow-up – – even if it’s not the one the studio ultimately goes for. Speaking at the film’s press junket, the filmmaker said he’d love to see a film set on Cybertron – which is where the first few minutes of “Bumblebee” are set – but there’s a catch : the whole film would have to be animated.

Well, actually it would be wholly animated because the beginning of the movie is completely animated. So, you know, it has live action lighting and textures and everything else, so it has that feeling, but yeah, I would love to see that movie. I gotta tell you… that was one of the biggest thrills for me, in this process, was bringing Cybertron to life and seeing the fall of Cybertron, just a glimpse of it, because that’s where the animated series began and we wanted to begin this film in the same manner, to pay tribute to that and it was so much fun. I tried to stuff as much as I possible could into those opening moments, just because that’s the movie I’ve always wanted to see, I would love to see a movie like that, yeah.

Meanwhile, the producers of “Bumblebee” seem to be toying with the possibility of an Optimus Prime movie.

Speaking to SYFY WIRE, Tom DeSanto and Lorenzo di Bonaventura confirmed chatter of having the transforming truck headline his own movie.

“I know Peter wants his own [solo film], Peter Cullen,” DeSanto said of Peter Cullen, who has long-voiced Optimus Prime.

Whatever the case, it all depends on the bank “Bumblebee” makes before Paramount grease the wheels on any sort of follow-up – – but based on the past performance of the franchise, the box office results are fairly predictable.
