Cafe Society

Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg are back sharing the silver screen in “Cafe Society”, the latest from Woody Allen. However, as one would imagine, their latest project sees the “American Ultra” and “Adventureland” stars taking on something a little different from their previous outings together.

Eisenberg plays young Bobby Dorfman, who leaves New York for the glamour of 1930s Hollywood. He lands a job with his uncle (Steve Carell) and meets Vonnie (Stewart), a beautiful, charming young woman with whom he falls madly in love. However Vonnie must choose between Bobby and her older lover, who turns out to be Bobby’s uncle.

When she decides to marry his uncle, Bobby returns to the Bronx where he begins working in a nightclub. He quickly rises through the social ranks of New York’s prestigious cafe society and marries the beautiful socialite Veronica (Blake Lively). They have a child together and Bobby takes over ownership of the booming nightclub. Everything is falling into place, until Vonnie walks back into Bobby’s life.

The story is solid, the film looks good and the performances in “Cafe Society” are likeable. There’s an easy chemistry between Stewart and Eisenberg that can probably be attributed to their continuing on-screen partnership. The film is full of the nostalgia and romance we’ve come to expect from Allen, and while it doesn’t really give us anything new from the veteran director, it is a perfectly enjoyable film in its own right.

“Cafe Society” isn’t Woody Allen’s worst movie. It’s not his best either.
