Headlined by Stephen Curry
TV1 Today announced the cast of the forthcoming “The King”, a new 2.1 million dollar television event to exclusively screen on TV1 (Foxtel/Austar) next year.
Slated for air mid-2007, “The King” stars Stephen Curry (“Rogue”, “The Nugget”) as TV comedy legend Graham Kennedy. The pic will trace his rise and rise from working class kid, through radio, TV, film and back to TV again. It starts filming next Monday in Melbourne.
Joining Curry in the cast is veteran actor Garry McDonald (“Moulin Rouge”) as Nicky Whitta, -the biggest radio personality in Australia during the 1950s and Graham’s first mentor.
“I think the writers have done a great job”, says McDonald. “The script is a very brave, fascinating and honest portrayal of this amazing man. I enjoyed the script so much”.

Shaun Micallef will play Colin Bednall, GTV9’s station manager who during the early days of television was a great supporter and champion of Kennedy, Steve Bisley will play Harry M Miller, Australia’s only celebrity manager who steered Graham’s career from local celebrity to national super-star, Stephen Hall is Bert Newton, Jane Allsop (“Blue Heelers”) is Noeline Browne, “Home and Away” fave Beau Brady will play Tim, a GTV9 dancer, Monica Maughan will play Kennedy’s Nan, Leo Taylor is Sir Frank Packer – a media magnate he created Australia’s first TV network with TCN and GTV Nine, the platform that rocketed Kennedy to national fame, Bernard Curry is John Wesley, a schoolboy friend of Grahams, and Beth Buchanan will also appear.
