CBS chairman talks Supergirl series

CBS chairman Nina Tassler has high hopes for the upcoming “Supergirl” series.

Speaking at the TCA’s, Tassler said “There is a human drama there” and it is “a real passion of ours”.

The premise of the new series “embodies so many of the qualities and characteristics of the classic female heroines on CBS,” making her relatable.

Tassler says she’s seen the costume and was blown away by it. Now, the hunt is on to find the right young woman to play Supergirl.

“We’re looking for quality, looking for charisma,” Tassler said. “We are looking for someone who inhabits the freshness of being a woman in today’s challenging climate, someone who can carry this kind of series on her shoulders.”

The new show will be somewhat a crime procedural – but not entirely.

“There will be cases, but what [executive producers] Ali Adler and Greg Berlanti pitched was a real series arc for her,” Tassler revealed. “The beauty of it is now with shows like Good Wife and Madam Secretary, you can have serialized story elements woven into a case of the week. She’s a crime solver, so she’s going to have to solve a crime. She’s going to get a bad guy.”

The title character will be a “a very strong, independent young woman. She’s coming into her own. She’s dealing with family issues. She’s dealing with work issues. It’s a female empowerment story. If you look at the strong female characters we have on the air, it really is resonant of that … We’re big feminists. It’s her intellect, it’s her skill, it’s her smarts. It’s all of those elements. It’s not just her strength, which she does have.”

While there have been rumours that “Supergirl” may cross over with “The Flash” and “Arrow”, seems CBS isn’t going to let that happen.. yet.

“That’s a different network so I think we’re going to keep Supergirl to ourself right now”.
