Hall H is where we get our filly of Spidey action today, with Sony pulling out all the stops to promote next year’s “Amazing Spider-Man” sequel.
On hand were director Marc Webb, stars Andrew Garfield, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, director Marc Webb, and producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad.
Garfield’s introduction was fun – hopefully it comes online; it involves a stunt in which he has trouble convincing the guards to let him in, but eventually comes out in full-costume – though it didn’t quite out as planned.
Emma Stone recorded a video message, from Paris where she’s filming a new Woody Allen movie, but half-way through the video Jamie Foxx’s Electro character would cut in, with zaps of electricity stuffing up the recording. Yes, this was intentional. Good one!
Garfield and Foxx have good chemistry. When the latter walked out, Garfield – still in full costume – said “I liked you in Django Unchained”, to which Foxx replied “I like the way you die, boy”.
The duo also bantered a bit about Foxx’s role in “Any Given Sunday”. Fun stuff!
On playing Electro, Foxx said “It’s extremely fun to play the villain, you don’t have to color inside the lines.” The actor said his 3-year-old was having a “Spider-Man”-themed birthday party when he got the call to say he’d been cast in the film.
Director Marc Webb says he feels a lot freer now to explore in the “Spider-Man” universe, having done the origin story; he plans for a rather ‘elaborate’ franchise, he said.
In the movie, Spider-Man’s having fun being Spider-Man, but Electro enters the picture and ruins his mood.
The footage – more a slightly extended trailer – we saw looked fun enough.
First we see Spider-Man chasing Paul Giamatti’s Rhino character – before he’s actually turned into ‘Rhino’ – through New York’s streets; while in pursuit, Spidey saves Max Dillon (who would later be Electro). Rhino isn’t a main character in the film, he’s simply used as a way for Spider-Man to cross paths with the man who would become Electro.
We also got to see Emma Stone and a bridge (oh-oh!), some nice stuff between Sally Field and Garfield, and Dillon’s transformation into the villain.
Also, we see Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan) visiting his unwell father, Norman (Chris Cooper) in an institute; a bit of action featuring Electro, showing off his skills, in Times Square; and a moment where everyone’s electricity is cut off – by you know who?
Webb explained that though there’s some huge action spectacle stuff here, it’s also a very human movie – it will be filled with emotion.
Garfield said he’d like for his character to team up with ‘The Avengers’ onscreen, but that he’s not supposed to say that. The audience clapped and cheered, as they would.
