David Lynch quits Twin Peaks!

The internet – or rather, twittsphere – erupted this morning with an unyielding rumour, one that surfaced at WonderCon, regarding 2016’s “Twin Peaks” reboot. According to those in attendance, Showtime had pulled the plug on David Lynch and Mark Frost’s sequel series.

It wasn’t long before furious fans got to the bottom of it. While Showtime are still determined to bring back “Twin Peaks”, it might be without David Lynch. Lynch, who explained in a series of tweets that he’d been trying to negotiate a good deal for himself for well over a year now, has pulled out of directing due to budgetary constraints. According to the famed filmmaker and lynchpin of the original series, he didn’t feel he’d be able to do justice to the new series given the budget Showtime had allocated him.

What this means is that while Showtime will likely continue with the series, and it’ll be Lynch and Frost’s scripts that’ll be used, the original co-creator mightn’t be involved.

But take a minute and consider what Lynch has done by outing Showtime as stingy. He now has millions of supporters in his pocket. He now has a lot of angry people going after Showtime. He now has a network that are cowering in the corner, questioning whether they should’ve given Lynch a better deal.

And what’s likely to happen? Knowing how things things usually work (does anyone remember the whole Jim Carrey/”Dumb & Dumber To” situation? very similar!), Showtime will likely now go back to Lynch with a bigger figure. They won’t want to upset those “Twin Peaks” fans, let alone be known as the network that lost one of the greats from their stable because of stinginess. In the coming days, you’ll likely hear whispers of renegotiation’s and continuing talks. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Lynch and Showtime are talking as we speak – particuarly since this news is all over the web.

In response to Lynch publicly announcing his exit, Showtime issued a statement suggesting that they were not only going to continue with “Twin Peaks” but that they hoped they’d be able to entice Lynch back.

We were saddened to read David Lynch’s statement today since we believed we were working towards solutions with David and his reps on the few remaining deal points. Showtime also loves the world of Twin Peaks and we continue to hold out hope that we can bring it back in all its glory with both of its extraordinary creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, at its helm.

And worse case scenario? Lynch doesn’t direct the episodes, but Showtime brings in some of the directors who helmed episodes of the original show (even actress Diane Keaton directed an ep) or employs some up-and-coming types that can emulate Lynch. Sure, Lynch is a legend, and the show would better with him helming, but it’s not the end of the world.
