Dirty Grandpa

Amidst the debate surrounding the lack of diversity in film, Lionsgate releases “Dirty Grandpa”, a racist, misogynistic, homophobic mess, complete with a child molestation “joke” and Robert De Niro pleasuring himself to porn the day after his late wife’s funeral.

De Niro plays Dick (eye-roll), the titular dirty Grandpa who convinces his uptight, soon-to-be-married grandson Jason (Zac Efron) to drive him to Florida. Reluctantly agreeing, Jason borrows his fiancée’s pick Mini Cooper – or ‘giant-labia’ as Dick calls it – and the two travel to Daytona Beach, Spring Break, where Dick spends the majority of the film trying to ‘bone’ a college chick.

How this project drew the star power of Robert De Niro and Zac Efron totally baffles me. Yes, comedy is subjective, but this film is totally unfunny on every level. Forget wit, intelligence, story or depth of character, “Dirty Grandpa” resorts to filthy language and even filthier topics at the butt of its jokes (again, need I say more than child molestation..?) I can only assume De Niro needed the cash and Efron followed.

From close-ups of bouncy, bikini-clad boobs and butts to the humiliation of a disabled, black, retired war Vet, “Dirty Grandpa” surpasses politically incorrect and becomes just downright disrespectful to everyone but egocentric, white, heterosexual cavemen. The film even says a big “F-you” to ‘the system’, mocking upper-class, white-guy lawyers and portraying the police as incompetent, repulsive idiots. Women are either monstrous, controlling spouses or (for the most part) sluts, black people are bullies, and don’t get me started on the constant berating of the film’s token gay and black guy.

We’re not even a month in, but I think – no, I’m certain – we’ve found the worst film of 2016 already.
