Eddie Murphy classic being remade!

Unlike ”Coming to America”, one ’80s Eddie Murphy comedy won’t be relaunched back with the legendary comic superstar in the saddle.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, while a sequel to 1988’s ”Coming to America” is in the works, with Murphy and co-star Arsenio Hall back in the main roles, the new “48 Hours” won’t be a reunion for Murphy and original co-star Nick Nolte. The 1982 classic, directed by Walter Hill, saw Murphy and Nolte team-up as a convict and cop, respectively, who must team up to catch a pair of cop killers within 48 hours. A 1990 sequel followed.

The new “48 Hours” will be a straight-up remake, says the trade, with Benny and Josh Safdie, the brother filmmaking team behind the Robert Pattinson crime thriller “Good Time”, directing. Jerrod Carmichael, the comedian who starred on and co-created NBC’s ‘The Carmichael Show,”, is co-writing the script with Ronald Bronstein. It probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that “48 Hours” isn’t going the way of “Coming to America” – for starters, they’ve tried a sequel to it (“Another 48 Hours”) and it didn’t work, but more interestingly, Chernin Entertainment, who are the producing outfit on the redo, seem to be big on putting their own spin – or, starting from scratch, if you will – on existing franchises. They did it with the recent “Planet of the Apes” films and it proved to be a fruitful decision.
