Erik Crary and Steven Piet – Uncle John

Produced by Erik Crary, directed by Steven Piet and co-written by both, Uncle John is a murder mystery about keeping a murder a mystery. Starring John Ashton (“Beverly Hills Cop”) in the title roll, Alex Moffat (The State of Us) as Ben, John’s nephew and Jenna Lyng (“The Devil’s in the Details”) as Kate, Ben’s love interest. The interesting part of the film isn’t the mystery: what happened to Danny’s (Ronnie Gene Blevins/ True Detective) brother? It’s that it’s two completely different stories with two very different objectives occurring simultaneously which are bound by a tiny common thread that really highlights the impact of a moment. There have been other movies in that style before, “Crash, 2004,” and “Magnolia” to name a couple, however “Uncle John” uses less characters and more direct storylines which really define the importance of the characters actions, their consequences and rewards, and what the weight of those results can do to a human being emotionally.

I had the pleasure of speaking on the phone with Crary and Piet yesterday about the film. They spoke to me about hiring cast and crew with full transparency about their production company and its budget, integrating storylines, and the value of silence in a film. “Uncle John” will come into select theatres in New York and California as well as a couple of other areas on September 18th, 2015.
