Caffeinated Clint
What a life. What an innings. But still, sad to hear of the passing of one of the greats today, Ernest Borgnine.
An Oscar winner for his role in “Marty”, and known for his roles in “McHale’s Navy” and “The Wild Bunch”, Borgnine slipped away at the ripe old age of 95, leaving his frame behind at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Borgnine, survived by his wife Tova and children, had suffered kidney failure.
“It’s a very sad day,” Borgnine’s manager Linda Bensky said. “The industry has lost someone great, the caliber of which we will never see again. A true icon. But more importantly, the world has lost a sage and loving man who taught us all how to ‘grow young.’ His infectious smile and chuckle made the world a happier place.”
Though it’s his classic roles we know him best for, Borgnine continued to remain steadily employment right up until his passing. His recent credits include “Red”, with Bruce Willis, “Strange Wilderness” with Steve Zahn and Justin Long, and “BASEketball”. His last recorded feature film appearance was, fittingly, in a western “The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernandez.”
I had hoped to work with Borgnine on a little western we’re been prepping, of which he had agreed to play a small role. Disappointed that’ll never be now, but comforted by the fact that ‘Ernie’ had wanted to do it and better still, leaves behind a legacy of great movie performances that spotlight the man in his prime.
Rest in Peace, sir.
