Halle Berry’s about to leave the super-duds – and by duds, I mean spandex outfits – behind for a while to star in something a little more deep and meaningful; but hopefully, no less fun.
The “X-Men” star has signed on for “Who is Doris Payne”, the true story of a woman who spent 75 years, at large, robbing precious stones.
Eunetta T.Boone, a seasoned TV writer who has written everything from episodes of “The Hugleys” to “Roc”, is the writer. Justin Berfield (remember him? From “Malcolm in the Middle”?), is one of the producers.
Never did Doris Payne grab the jewels and run. That wasn’t her way. Instead, she glided in, engaged the clerk in one of her stories, confused them and easily slipped away with a diamond ring, usually to a waiting taxi cab.
“She was a jewel thief for six decades and worked all over the world”, Berfield, who also produced the upcoming Jessica Simpson starrer “Blonde Ambition” said recently. “Doris is a magnificent woman and she’s incredibly intelligent. “I aim to tell her story the way it is. It will explore claims she has a mental disorder but I hope to leave it up to the audience to decide whether Doris is a hero or a villain. There’s no way she shouldn’t be punished but it is important to state Doris never physically hurt anybody. She made her living stealing from the rich and from stores.”
At present, Payne is still in prison – but could be free within a couple of years.
