HBO confirms Game of Thrones’ final season, talks potential spinoff

It’s long been rumoured, but now HBO programming president Casey Bloys has all but confirmed the news that hit show “Game of Thrones” is set to end after its eighth season.

When asked at the Television Critics Association press tour whether the eighth season would be the last for the show, Bloys said HBO will follow the lead of exec producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who have previously hinted that there would only be two more seasons in the series.

“Yes, I think [Benioff & Weiss] have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do,” he said. “If I could get them to do more, I would take 10 seasons, but we want to take their lead with what they can do and what the best version of the show is.”

As for a potential spinoff, Bloys admitted that he’s “not opposed to” it, however he’s “not sure that the guys could really wrap their heads around it when they’re just about to start production” on season seven.

“It has to make sense creatively,” he said. “The guys weren’t opposed to it, but there’s no concrete plans for it at this point.”

The seventh season of “Game of Thrones” will premiere next summer.
