Gareth Edwards to direct Star Wars movie

With his latest snaring a Beyonce’s bootie-sized load of box-office receipts, Gareth Edwards has likely gotten to know his ring tone real well this week.

Disney and Lucasfilm have beaten untitled talking animatronic-animal movie #24 to the punch, tapping “Godzilla” director Gareth Edwards to direct the the first of the new “Star Wars” spin-off movies. Gary Whitta (“The Book of Eli”) is on screenplay duties.

The lads at Lucasfilm aren’t saying, but a possible release schedule of all upcoming “Star Wars” movies was doing the rounds a week or so ago, and it suggested that the first of the standalone “Star Wars” movies would be “Boba Fett”. If this is the flick Edwards is helming, then Joe Johnston – the “Empire Strikes Back” alum who has been championing a spin-off chronicling Bobba’s rise for years – is going to be warming up his lightsaber for a duel. Not my problem.

A couple of million bucks worth of fireworks, a capable Kiwi to fill Boba’s armour, and a cameo by this dude, and Edwards is bound to rock it like a wonky pine bed.

Edwards’ movie – whatever it is (for all we know, Disney are saving up the biggest surprise… “Jar Jar Binks : The Movie” for last) – is due out December 16, 2016.

“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life — join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm,” said Edwards.

Whitta states, “From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true. I’m still pinching myself.”

Clint Morris adds, “I don’t make fucking care what they do, just gimme some new Star Wars already!”.
