If you could wash your car with DVDs instead of sponges and soap, I’d apply a bit of disinfectant to the top layer of the ‘Gilmore Girls’ discs. After all, would you trust washing your car with anything less clean?
Its true, ‘Gilmore Girls’ is one of the cleanest shows on the box – and its leads aren’t in an urgent need of a bath either – everything about the long-running (usually when a series gets to about season 5 it starts to lose its balance and fall before that season comes to a close) dramedy whiffs of goodness: its morals; its life lessons; the fact that it’ll never taint a young one’s mind – and, most notably, the annihilation of any intimation of you-know-what from its pattern.
But remember, sometimes good things can be tasty.
Granted, “Gilmore Girls” has never had anything on “Seventh Heaven” – a show that punishes its titular characters with 15 Hail Mary’s should any of them be caught listening to the ‘Devils Music’ (usually Keith Urban), spotted chewing gum or holding hands with a person of the opposite (imagine if it were the same – – – ouch!) sex. In fact, the show’s a bit firmly implanted in reality…
… If you can overlook the fact that the hottest mumma in town (Lauren Graham) sleeps in a bed alone most nights.
Though it’s eventful as the previous seasons, and mumma [and daughter] is still as hot as a pizza pocket, there’s something missing in this sixth season: Oh, yes, it’s the lead character. Ya see, Rory (Alexis Bledel) went away to college at the end of the last season… and we all know what happens to show’s that send their lead characters off to college, don’t we? Dawson? Brandon? Screech?
If the show isn’t put on the fast-track to the incinerator, it survives with the ‘college’ characters – in this case, Rory and friends – only popping back into town intermittingly, and as a consequence, Rory hardly ever sharing a scene with her on-screen mother, Lorelai (Graham). Since the chemistry of Graham and Bledel is half the reason for the show’s success…. That’s, um, a little sucky-sucky.
To make up for the fact that daughter is off at college, Loreali’s now forced to mix it up with a dog (what? No Cousin Oliver?) while we’re forced to spend more time with secondary characters like Paris, Lane [and her band] and Luke’s relatives.
There’s a reason that creator Amy Sherman-Palladino left at the end of Season 6…. But this isn’t it. Couldn’t have helped though.
Still enjoyable for fans, but a little “Everwood : Season 4” – that’s when that one went all ‘I think the stove needs to be lit again’ like – for my liking.
Alexis Bledel is heavier than the extras package, too. Yep, zip.
