Grey’s Anatomy spin-off in the works? Updated!

Featuring Kate Walsh’s character

“Grey’s Anatomy” message boards are clogged with posts about a potential spin-off of the popular medico dramedy.

Indeed the posts/posties are correct. A spokesperon for ABC has confirmed that a new series, featuring the character of Dr. Addison Montgomery-Shepherd (Kate Walsh), is in the development stage.

At this stage, it looks like the pilot of the show will air as an episode of “Anatomy” sometime in May.

So, of course, now everyone is speculating that Kate Walsh is leaving her post at “Anatomy”? Well, that would make sense wouldn’t it…. But it’s a bit of a double-edged sword leaving a phenomenally successful series for a spin-off? I mean, it could be the next “Angel” or “N.C.I.S”, but it could also be the next “Time of Your Life” or “Models Inc”.

Update! : The Hollywood Reporter just confirmed the news, adding that Taye Diggs (“Kevin Hill”, “The House on Haunted Hill”) will also star in the show.

Says the trade, “….The show will test the waters as a back-door pilot, an expanded two-hour episode of “Grey’s” slated to air in May. It will center on neonatal surgeon Addison Shepherd (Walsh), a character who has enjoyed a strong following from fans since she was introduced at the end of the hot surgical drama’s first season.

It is understood that the back-door pilot episode will feature Shepherd on the verge of leaving Seattle Grace, a scenario that will be triggered if ABC goes with the spinoff for next season”
