Update! : Have Lord and Miller been looking for an out for a while now? According to The Wrap, the duo met with Warner Bros about directing the long-gestating “The Flash” while “Han Solo” was on hiatus. Robert Zemeckis is the current frontrunner to direct the DC superhero film but fact that that Lord and Miller took a meeting suggests they were open to the job.
I’ve got a bad feeling about this…. The Star Wars “Han Solo” spinoff has hit a roadblock, with directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller parting ways with the project. The movie has been filming since February in London, and the two directors have been on board since July 2015.
In a statement, LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy stated:
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon.
Lord and Miller previously helmed “The LEGO Movie”, as well as “21 Jump Street” and “22 Jump Street”. In regards to them leaving “Han Solo”, the pair had this to say:
Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew.
The film stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, as well as Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Michael K. Williams, Ian Kenny and Donald Glover. The release date of May 25, 2018 at this stage remains unchanged, with several reshoots planned for the summer.
The story focuses around the character of Han Solo, made famous by Harrison Ford, and how he became the smuggler thief whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encounter in the cantina in “A New Hope”.
It’s certainly a set-back for the film, but here’s hoping ultimately a good decision that results in an even better movie.
