Hugh Jackman magically disappears from Houdini musical

Hirsute matinee idol Hugh Jackman has escaped from the shackles.

The “Wolverine” star says he’ll no longer be playing Harry Houdini in the proposed stage musical. It’d seem the busy Aussie thesp just has too full a dance card – what with no less than five films in various stages of development, including Paramount’s “Six Years” and Fox’s “Wolverine” threequel – to commit to dancing around in chains every night.

“I have greatly enjoyed the collaborative process on Houdini,” Jackman said. “Ultimately, though, I wasn’t able to commit to the time this role will require. I have tremendous respect and admiration for the creative team and I wish everyone the best. I know they’re well on their way to making something extraordinary.”

Jackman’s not the first name to free himself from the Houdini musical; “Newsroom” alum Aaron Sorkin also exited the production back at the start of the year.
