It’s Official : Twin Peaks returning 2016!

Seems those tweets were intentionally exciting…

TWIN PEAKS IS RETURNING!

Some detective work by some fellow “Twin Peaks” fans on the weekend (they spotted Mark Frost following Showtime PR, and vice versa, on Twitter – they later removed each other from their following lists when it got out, only leading more fuel to the fire) led to an assumption that the greatest series of the ’90s was headed for a rebirth on premium cabler Showtime.

Today, that was confirmed.

Showtime will reunite David Lynch and Mark Frost for an 9-episode “Twin Peaks” mini-series beginning in 2016. Filming will begin next year.

Frost will write the episodes, with Lynch directing. Though no cast have been officially announced, Kyle MacLachlan has hinted that he’s set to reprise Dale Cooper, while there’s intel out there suggesting old favourites like Big Ed Hurley (Everett McGill), Lucy Moran (Kimmy Robertson), Leland Palmer (Ray Wise), and Sarah Palmer (Grace Zabriskie) are also onboard. I’m told to expect the MacLachlan announcement first.

Mark Frost has done a swag of interviews in the hours since the announcement, and though he won’t confirm any specifics, hints that the show will (much like the “Dallas” reboot that was recently yanked from the air) bring together all those old favourites as well as new faces, and contain another central mystery – much like the ‘Who Killed Laura Palmer?’ storyline of the original series.

Showtime has released both a video and a press release announcing the news :

“The groundbreaking television phenomenon, Golden Globe and Peabody Award-winner Twin Peaks will return as a new limited series on Showtime in 2016,” the statement said.

“Series creators and executive producers David Lynch and Mark Frost will write and produce all nine episodes of the limited series, and Lynch will direct every episode.

“Set in the present day, Twin Peaks will continue the lore of the original series, providing long-awaited answers and a satisfying conclusion for the series’ passionate fan base”
