The 5 movies I am most excited to see in 2014. (And apparently you guys are pretty excited for them too!)
2014 is shaping up to be a pretty stellar year for films, particularly if you are a fan of young adult literature adaptations and long thought dead TV show revivals.
There are some big releases coming out: Marvel has both’ Capitan America: The Winter Soldier’ and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ coming out, hoping to extend their reign as box office kings. Andrew Garfield is setting out to prove again that he is a far better Spiderman the Tobey Maguire could ever have dreamed in ‘The Amazing Spiderman 2’. ‘Divergent’ is hoping to get a chunk of The Hunger Games market with its strong leading lady and highly dystopian future. ‘Her’, which granted has been released in a few markets in 2013, will definitely be using the start of 2014 to gain its Oscar buzz.
But the top 5 movies I am most excited to see are none of the above, and they are well spaced out throughout the year. So my recommendations for the 5 movies you should see in 2014 are:
Veronica Mars Movie: (March 14th) If you were a fan of the TV show back in the day you are probably already excited for this movie to come out, but I urge anyone who hasn’t seen the show to give the movie a chance. An awesome trailer was just released and it shows the characters haven’t lost their spark in the 10 years they’ve been off the air. While the movie will be filled with cameo’s from characters past and certainly seems to be as funny and smart as we came to expect the original to be, what excited me most is a new generation of young women being introduced to the sassy, intelligent, vulnerable, hard-working and incredibly stubborn Veronica Mars. Also, Jason Dohring looks really good leaning against that car.
X:Men Days of Future Past: (May 22nd) Cards on the table, my favourite X-Men is X-Men: First Class. So obviously I’m going to be excited for this follow up. Incorporating all the best aspects of the series this movie is either destined for greatness or to be the definition of trying too hard. It smartly seems to focus on the strong leads it has in Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender with incredibly support from Jennifer Lawrence, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. I have watched the trailer for this movie about 50 times and I still have no real clue for what story it is going to tell, but I do know I can’t wait to find out.
The Fault In Our Stars: (June 6th) Some people will have no idea what this movie about and write it off as sappy teen love story. Those people will be so wrong. Based on the New York Times Best Seller by John Green the film tells the story of young cancer suffers Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters. If the movie gets even a quarter of the emotion that Green was able to put into the page, you better take your tissues into this one.

The Maze Runner: (September 22nd) Another young adult literature adaptation, The Maze Runner is a story set in a (you guessed it) dystopian future with a teenage boy Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) being deposited in a maze with his memory erased and made to fight to escape. This film has a strong cast of the next generation of leading men in Hollywood (including the awesome kid from Love, Actually!) but the real draw card is to see O’Brien in a leading role. He is stepping up on MTV’s Teen Wolf and I think The Maze Runner will be the proof he is on the way to much bigger things.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 1: (November 22nd) I’m a little more cautionary with my excitement over this one as I was with the last instalment. ‘Catching Fire’ was an incredible film from all standpoints, and it will be very interesting to see if they can pull it off again. The problem ‘Mockingjay’ will face is the slow source material that removes a main character from most of the action (although it does give another one a chance to finally step up) and its incredibly dark and depressing subject matter. ‘Mockingjay: Part One’ may also suffer from the same problem Harry Potter faced with part one of its two part finale ‘Deathly Hallows’; that you are adapting something without a ending so the entire film can feel like pretty pointless. However it is once again in the capable hands of Francis Lawrence who directed Catching Fire and at this point I’d probably watch Jennifer Lawrence read the phone book, so I can only hope for the best.
