McConaughey, Gibson, Macy, Zahn…Magnum P.I?

The cast of “Sahara” and Tyrese, for TV-to-Film offering?

I like the idea of Matthew McConaughey playing Magnum P.I a lot better than I do that George Clooney rumour – love George, but this character needs to be younger, and be less ageing playboy, and more bed-hoppin’ stud – but I tell ya, it still can’t swallow seeing the Hawaiian-shirt clad action hero as anyone other than Tom Selleck.

Yeah, cue the friggin’ violins.

Yes. I know. Selleck’s pushing into his twilight years. I know he’s no longer a bankable box-office commodity. I know studios wouldn’t wanna work with him (unless, of course, that studio is TNT). I know. I know. I know. But Selleck is “Magnum”, the same way “The Honeymooners” was Jackie Gleason – not Cedric the Fuckin’ Entertainer.

Selleck was trying to get a “Magnum P.I” movie off the ground for years – at one time even asking his old friend, author Tom Clancy, to pen a screenplay for it – and nobody was much interested. Not until this trend of remaking old TV series came into play.

But I digress; Dark Horizons reports that Hollywood’s number 1 party animal, McConaughey, could be able to win the keys to the burgundy Ferrari. He’s apparently been courted to star in “Dodgeball” director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s big-screen version of the classic 80s TV series.

Tyrese Gibson (“The Transformers”) is tipped to be playing chopper flying T.C, William H.Macy is the favourite to play Higgins, and Steve Zahn (“Reality Bites”) is the frontrunner for the role of Magnum’s friend, Rick. As the site points out, all those guys – bar Tyrese – starred together in the adventure romp “Sahara”, and in similar parts. Kinda weird. Obviously we’ve got a lazy casting director on our hands, or one damn big fan of that poorly received movie.

So… can we find a moustache for McConaughey that’d work? Can we find a rug for his chest? Can we find him some undersized shorts? Give us a look at how he fares in the get-up, then we’ll come back with a thumbs up or a thumbs down, right?

Whatever the case, the films probably still a way’s off yet, so plenty of time for more casting rumours between now and then.
